The euro rate at Moldovan banks is a moving target. It depends on:
One bank may shift its EUR rate 1–3 times a day. Another, once a day. The upshot: the leaderboard of buy-rate banks (and the separate sell-rate one) is a snapshot of right now. Tomorrow the order may be different.
So there's no universal answer to "which Chisinau bank has the best euro rate". The honest answer is "the one in the widget below right now" — a specific bank with a specific rate.
The widget below ranks Chisinau banks by their euro rate. At the top, a summary block: the day's best rate for your chosen direction (buy or sell), the leading bank, and the market average. Below, every bank with its last-updated time.

A few habits when working with the list:
The euro is one of the most liquid currencies in Moldova. Which means:
Spreads at big banks are narrow. No one wants to fall behind the market on EUR — clients leave for competitors fast.
Quotes refresh often. During the working day the rate changes more than once, especially at banks with an active currency position.
Competition on small amounts. It isn't just big clients that matter — the flow of small 100–500 EUR operations is significant.
Segmentation by product. One bank may have the best cash rate, another the best EUR-deposit rate, a third the best SWIFT transfer.
So the "cash-rate leader" isn't necessarily "the most convenient bank for euros overall". If you need a deposit or regular account conversions — check the banks' internal rates, they can differ from cash.
You can describe a general pattern without nailing down specific leaders forever:
Large commercial banks with an active currency position. Their main advantage: a big stock of banknotes, frequent rate updates, attractive terms for large clients. The banks in Moldova's top five by assets.
Banks focused on corporate clients. May offer a good rate for large amounts but are less active on the retail side.
Subsidiaries of international groups. Sometimes show competitive rates thanks to access to the parent's currency position.
Regional networks. May lose to the capital on spread but win on service speed.
Who's leading right now — the widget shows you. It's a habit worth 30 seconds every time.
There are situations where the rate leader in the widget isn't the best choice for you:
The leader's branch is far away. On a small amount the saving is less than the time spent travelling.
The leader doesn't have the right denominations. If you're buying 2,000 EUR and want 100-euro notes but the leader only has 200s — go to the second bank.
The leader's rate is stale. If the last-updated time is old and the market is moving, the real rate at the counter may be worse.
The leader has a wide spread. A good buy rate can pair with a bad sell rate. If you might reverse the operation — factor it in.
The leader has long queues. At peak hours in big central banks you can lose half an hour.
The leader has non-standard terms. For example, the best rate kicks in from 1,000 EUR, and you have 500.
In any of these, the second or third on the list often comes out ahead in practice.
EUR amount | What matters | Pick by |
|---|---|---|
50–200 | Branch proximity | Any top-5 with a convenient address |
200–500 | Proximity + narrow spread | Top-3 + a quick spread check |
500–2,000 | Rate + convenience | Leader, or the second bank if it's nearer |
2,000–5,000 | Rate + availability of denominations | Call the leader, confirm stock |
5,000–10,000 | Rate + individual rate | Leader + ask about special terms |
10,000+ | Individual negotiation | Contact the bank manager in advance |
One of the most common scenarios in Moldova. Say relatives sent €800 from Italy and you want to convert to MDL.
Algorithm:
Whole operation: about an hour. Compared with going to a random bank you usually save 30–150 MDL.
More on transfers from relatives and euros in the northern regions — in Where to exchange euros in Balti.
A family is getting ready for a holiday and needs to buy 2,000 EUR with MDL. What to do:
On 2,000 EUR the gap between the leader and the third on the list can be 100–300 MDL. Worth the call and a small detour.
Step 1. Decide the direction. Selling or buying EUR.
Step 2. Open the widget. Switch the filter to your direction.
Step 3. Note the top five banks. The leader plus four close ones.
Step 4. Check the last-updated times. If the leader's rate is fresh — great. If stale — consider the runner-up.
Step 5. Open the leader's card. Branch address, opening hours.
Step 6. If the address is inconvenient or the right note isn't there — go with option two.
Step 7. Call ahead if the amount is large or you need a special arrangement.
Step 8. Go exchange.

The leader shifts. Open the widget on this page — it has the current ranking for EUR buy or sell.
Yes, if the ranking is up to date and you've picked the right direction. For a large amount, add a call to the bank to confirm terms.
Compare the difference with the nearest ones. If the saving is less than the cost of the trip — pick the closer one.
For a large amount (3,000 EUR and up), sometimes yes. It reduces the risk of a "bad moment" on the rate.
The one with a consistently narrow spread and a convenient branch. Not necessarily the day's leader every time — consistency matters more.
Not all. Some branches only handle notes up to €200 or run extra checks on larger ones. Call before you go.
For big Chisinau banks — narrow, a strong number. 0.20–0.25 is mid. 0.35+ is on the wide side.
The widget shows the cash rate — the one the bank uses for over-the-counter currency exchange. The same bank also has an internal rate — for non-cash conversion between a client's accounts or between an account and cash.
These two rates often differ:
The internal rate is closer to the official one. The spread is smaller — the bank carries less risk, currency doesn't leave the system.
The cash rate is set by the market. A wider spread — the bank prices in risk and the operating costs of the cash desk.
Internal cross-rates are handier. Converting EUR to a USD account without going through MDL — usually at a better pair.
If you already have an account at the bank and want to convert funds within the account rather than "bring in cash" — sometimes it's better to work via online banking, not the counter. On a large amount the difference is real.
If you receive a 500–800 € transfer every month from relatives in the EU, optimisation looks less like "find the day's leader" and more like "pick a convenient bank for the long term".
What matters for a regular client:
For one-off clients the widget leader matters more. For regulars, stability and convenience often win.
"The best euro rate at Chisinau banks" is today's ranking, not a permanent truth. The widget on this page updates during the day, and the moment you check it'll show the live picture. The main moves: switch direction, look at the top five, compare against your amount, check the address. On small amounts this takes five minutes; on large ones it's worth an extra call and some prep. Either way, the gap in value compared with a "random" bank is noticeable.
