Weekdays and weekends in Moldova's exchange business are two different modes:
Weekdays. All banks open, competition is high, quotes update often, the choice is wide.
Saturday. Some branches are open, sometimes on a shortened schedule. Rates can be "fresh" in the morning and "frozen" by lunchtime. Queues happen at the banks that are open.
Sunday. Minimal mode. Most bank counters are closed. What works: branches in shopping centres, a few exchange offices, ATMs.
Public holidays. Moldovan public holidays (1 January, 7 January — Orthodox Christmas, 8 March, 1 May, 9 May, 27 August — Independence Day, 31 August — Limba Noastra, and others). Many banks and exchange offices are closed or run a shortened schedule.
Some bank branches. Especially in the centre, near shopping centres, on the main streets. Usually open until 13:00–14:00, sometimes until 17:00.
Exchange offices in the centre. Most chain exchange offices work a full day on Saturday or stay open into the late evening.
Branches in shopping centres. They run on the mall's schedule — often 10:00–22:00.
ATMs. 24/7.
Airport. Exchange counters run on the flight schedule.

A handful of bank branches in shopping centres. Not all, but some of the big banks keep their mall branches open on Sunday.
Exchange offices in the centre. Some open, some closed. Stick to the trusted chain points.
Branches in shopping centres. Most malls work on Sunday — and so do the exchange counters inside.
ATMs. 24/7.
Airport. On the flight schedule.
The widget below shows live bank rates. On weekends, watch the update time carefully — at some banks the rate can still be "Friday's".
If it's a weekend, pay attention to:
A tourist landed Friday evening. Airport exchange for a starter amount. Saturday morning — a bank in the centre, open until 13:00. By 12:00, the main exchange is done.
A local forgot to buy euros. On Saturday, by 13:00 — a bank in a shopping centre. If you miss it — an exchange office in the centre.
A tourist is leaving on Sunday. Swap the leftover on Saturday, ahead of time — not on Sunday in the departure zone.
A wedding or family event on Saturday. In the morning — bank, stock up for the day. Once the event starts you won't make it back to an open branch.
A shopping trip on Sunday. Pull cash from an ATM in the mall. Don't carry the whole sum in one pocket.
A Bucharest trip on Sunday morning. The day before — bank, exchange into EUR or RON. On Sunday it's too late.
A company party on Saturday evening. Pull cash on Friday evening — calmer than a Saturday-morning sprint.
An unexpected family gathering. ATM in any neighbourhood. For big purchases — card.

You urgently need MDL on Saturday. First check whether your favourite bank's branch is open. If yes — go there; if not — exchange office in a mall or in the centre. Or an ATM.
You want to compare rates on Sunday. In the widget, look at the update time. If the top-3 banks' quotes aren't fresh — treat them as a reference, not the final number.
A large exchange falls on the weekend. If you can — move it to Monday. On big sums the Saturday rate is often worse than the weekday one.
A tourist in Chisinau on a weekend day. Not much to exchange — an exchange office in the centre, a mall, or an ATM will do. The rate will be slightly worse, but convenience wins.
Travel into or out of Chisinau on the weekend. Sort the exchange in advance, on a weekday.
On weekends, Chisinau's exchange points cluster around:
Shopping centres. Mall Dova, Shock, Atrium, Jumbo, Plaza. Many banks have branches there that follow the mall's schedule.
Stefan cel Mare Boulevard. The main street, dense with exchange offices. Most are open Saturday and Sunday.
Central Market. A few exchange offices near the market exits, open on weekends too.
The train and bus stations. Exchange counters aimed at people coming and going.
Near the big hotels. Around Casa Mea, Codru, Continental — exchange offices with extended hours.
Airport. On the flight schedule, year-round.
A few rules of thumb:
Spread is wider. On average noticeably wider than on weekdays. Banks and exchange offices build in a "weekend premium".
Widget leaders may be closed. Some of the weekday top banks are closed on Sunday. The real choice is narrower.
Street exchanges get more "active". Less bank competition — more room for the exchange offices.
Rates are more stable. Without the interbank market there's less movement, quotes "freeze".
Net effect — on weekends only exchange what you actually need. Plan the main transactions for weekdays.
Step 1. Decide whether it can wait. If you can hold off until Monday — do.
Step 2. Open the widget. Check quote freshness.
Step 3. Find branches that are open. In the shopping centres, the centre, near the stations.
Step 4. If you're going to a bank — call. Not every branch is open on Saturday. Confirm the schedule.
Step 5. If it's an exchange office — check the licence and conditions.
Step 6. Don't rush. On weekends it's easy to accept a bad rate. Compare before you swap.

Some branches are — usually until 13:00–14:00. Not all of them, so check with your bank.
Exchange offices in the centre, in the shopping centres, at the airport, or via ATM. Most bank counters are closed.
On average — yes, the spread is noticeably wider. But specific exchange offices can still offer a normal rate.
You can, if you find a big bank with an open branch. Better — move it to Monday.
An ATM is the most universal option. Or an exchange office in a shopping centre.
Yes, on the flight schedule. Exchange counters and ATMs work.
On the bank's website or app. Sometimes calling is easier — the hours shown in Google can be out of date.
Beyond the regular weekend, Moldova has public holidays. On those days, exchanging currency can be tricky:
1 January — New Year. Most banks closed. Exchange offices in shopping centres run on a special schedule.
7–8 January — Orthodox Christmas. Some banks may not open.
8 March — International Women's Day. Shortened schedule at some banks.
Late April – early May — Easter. Depends on the year. Some banks close for Orthodox Easter.
1 May — Labour Day. Most banks closed.
9 May — Victory and Europe Day. Shortened schedule.
27 August — Moldova's Independence Day. Most banks closed.
31 August — Limba Noastra (Our Language Day). Some banks don't work.
25 December — Catholic Christmas. Shortened schedule at some banks.
Before a trip, check the Moldovan public-holidays calendar. Especially if you're planning a large exchange or your flights land on holiday dates.
If you know you'll be spending on the weekend, it pays to prepare:
On Friday. Withdraw or exchange a stash for the weekend. For 2 days, 1,500–2,500 MDL covers most tourist scenarios.
Sort out a taxi. If a long ride is planned — book through an app linked to your card.
Stock up on small notes. 50, 100, 200 MDL notes — for paying private taxis and cafes.
Look up the hours of the important banks nearby. If something urgent comes up, you'll know where to go.
Weekend currency exchange in Chisinau is possible, but with limits. Saturday — some banks and almost all the exchange offices. Sunday — exchange offices, shopping centres, ATMs. The rate is usually worse, the choice narrower. The main rule: if you can, wait until Monday. If you can't — check the schedule of the specific branch, compare with the widget, and don't rush the decision.
