The dollar is a mass-market currency in Moldova. In Balti it's no less common than in the capital, because a meaningful share of the Moldovan diaspora works in the US and Canada, and remittances from there arrive first and foremost in USD. That means banks in Balti know how to handle the dollar, and for standard operations (50–1,000 USD in modern notes) the exchange here is a routine task.
Differences start at the "non-standard" edge:
These definitions are basic, but at the counter they're easy to mix up:
The gap between those two rates is the bank's USD spread. The tighter the spread, the more actively the bank works with USD. In Balti, spreads at the major banks are usually comparable to Chisinau's; at small local branches they can be a touch wider.

The widget below shows current bank quotes on USD. The bank card shows whether there's a branch in Balti. The time of the last rate update is shown next to each.
A few reference points for the Balti scenario:
Counters in Balti are less "battle-hardened" than in Chisinau. The flow is lighter, the teller more attentive, and a questionable note draws more questions. What that means in practice:
Sort your notes in advance. One stack for modern, clean notes; another for older series or worn ones. Don't bring everything in a pile.
The old "small heads". 1995-series dollars and older — without modern security features, with the smaller portrait. Balti accepts them more reluctantly than the capital. Call before visiting.
Wear and folds. Light wear is fine. Heavy wear that obscures the security features is grounds for a separate check.
Stamps, writing, numbers on the margins. Sometimes people mark a note "so they remember it". Banks treat marked notes differently; in Balti, more strictly.

Who's exchanging | Typical amount | What matters | Call ahead? |
|---|---|---|---|
Recipient of regular transfers from the US | $200–800 | Stable bank, convenient hours | Once to settle on a bank, then no |
Local saving up for a major purchase | $1,500–5,000 | Rate and note availability | Recommended above $3,000 |
Business traveller or someone in transit | $100–300 | Proximity to your route | No |
Buying USD for a trip | $500–2,000 | Sell rate + availability | Yes, a day ahead |
Exchanging inheritance / proceeds from property sale | $5,000+ | Rate + source document | Required |
Older-series notes or notes with defects | Any | Whether the bank will accept them | Required |
Step 1. Lock in the direction. "Changing N USD to MDL" or "Buying N USD for MDL".
Step 2. Open the widget. Pick USD and the direction. Note 2–3 banks with branches in Balti.
Step 3. Check your notes (if selling). Modern separately, disputed separately. If all you have is older/worn — a call is required.
Step 4. Call ahead if anything's non-standard. An amount above $3,000, disputed notes, buying a large amount — three reasons to call.
Step 5. Take your passport and a source document, if applicable. Transfer, sale of property, salary.
Step 6. Go to the bank. Hand the teller the "easy" notes first, then the disputed ones. Get the receipt.
The dollar is the main currency of Moldovan remittances from the US and Canada. Northern Moldova has historically supplied a meaningful flow of migration to North America, and for many Balti families dollar income is a regular part of the household budget. That shapes the exchange routine too.
A few habits that regular recipients have settled on:
Don't change "the whole thing at once". If a $800 transfer arrives every month, you don't have to convert all of it the day it lands. Sometimes it's smarter to split: $300 right away for current expenses, the rest after 2–3 weeks at a better rate.
Use USD as an "inflation buffer". The Moldovan leu is sensitive to inflation; the dollar is more stable. Keeping part of your savings in USD is a common practice. It reduces the need for frequent exchanges.
Hold a USD + EUR "pair". If you have family in both the US and the EU, part of the transfers come in dollars and part in euros. That lowers the risk of a "bad exchange day" in one currency.
Check cross rates regularly. If you have USD and need to buy EUR (for a trip to Europe, say), ask the bank for the EUR/USD cross rate directly. Don't go through a double conversion USD → MDL → EUR.
In Balti it's not unusual for a family to set money aside in USD for years — for a wedding, a house, the kids' education. After 5–10 years, they've accumulated a stack of notes from different years and in different conditions.
What to do with that:
Step 1. Sort by year. Modern (2004+) — separately. 1996–2003 notes — separately. "Small heads" (pre-1995) — separately.
Step 2. Sort by condition. Clean and intact — separately. Worn, slightly creased — separately. Stamped, stained or damaged — separately.
Step 3. Plan for the exchange. Modern, clean notes — no questions at any bank. "Small heads" — with a call first, possibly at a different bank. Damaged — separately, with the chance of refusal.
Step 4. A source document. On a $5,000+ exchange the bank may ask for a source-of-funds explanation. Prepare your verbal version and, where possible, a document (if it's a transfer — a statement from the payment system).
Step 5. Don't rush. A large multi-year cushion doesn't need urgent conversion. Compare banks, pick a good day on the rate, go in calmly.

The same logic as for euros, adjusted for USD liquidity:
City centre (Stefan cel Mare, Independentei). The highest density of bank branches. If you live or work nearby, that's the obvious choice.
Around Balti City Mall and the larger retail clusters. Convenient if you're combining the exchange with errands.
Residential areas. Less choice, but the major-network banks are present here too. Rates are close to central ones.
Near transport hubs (train station, bus station). Suitable for transit operations. The rate can be a touch worse because of the transit traffic.

The leader shifts. The widget on this page ranks banks by the current rate. The leaders are usually large commercial banks with an active currency position.
In Balti — sometimes. Some branches accept them, some refuse or ask for a check. A call is required.
For amounts up to $5,000 — usually no. For amounts of $10,000+ — it can make sense.
Light tears at the edge are accepted by most banks. A serious tear through the security features is grounds for a separate check.
Most banks ask for a document on any operation. Safer to always have your passport.
Sometimes — if the bank has the notes in stock. More often, you'll need to put in a request a day ahead. A call is required.
The major banks — several times a day. Smaller branches — once a day, in the morning. The update time is shown in the widget.
Balti has fewer crowded spots and less "street noise" — but the basic safety rules still apply:
It's not paranoia — it's basic hygiene around cash currency.
Balti is a small but mature dollar-exchange market. Rates are comparable to Chisinau's, the main banks are present, operations go calmly. The key thing is to call the bank before visiting if you have a large amount, non-standard notes or an unusual scenario. At the routine level of $200–1,000 it's enough to open the widget, pick the nearest bank and walk in with your passport.
