At any airport in the world the rate is worse than in the city — that's the fee for "right now, just after landing". In Chisinau the gap is moderate but real. On €500 it can be 100–200 MDL — about the price of a decent dinner downtown.
The logic is simple: an airport exchange point works with one type of customer — the passenger who needs money urgently and isn't going to look for an alternative. There's no competition (no other exchange points right next to it), so the rate shifts in the point's favour.
It's not a "scam" — it's a market price for access. The traveller's job isn't to idealise the airport or to dismiss it outright, but to use it in the right proportion.
The widget below shows current rates at Moldovan banks for the main currencies. That's your benchmark — the "market average" you compare the airport's offer against.

A simple rule: if the airport rate is 1–2% worse than the widget average, that's normal — change a small amount. 3–5% worse — change only enough for the ride. 6% or more worse — use an ATM or your card, leave the main exchange for the city.
Late arrival. 23:00 or 02:00, when city banks are already closed and you need MDL for a taxi.
Urgent expenses. A train ticket, a SIM card top-up, water after a long flight.
Confidence. The psychological comfort of "I have local money" — especially on your first trip to Moldova.
Family with kids. When you can't afford the time to compare — the small overpayment is worth less than the saved stress.
Transit. A few hours in Chisinau between flights — change the minimum for a snack and head back.
Amount above €300–500. At that scale the rate gap is already real money.
No rush. You have a hotel or a meeting, no need to head off with local money right away.
You have a working card. Pay for the taxi by card and do the main exchange the next day.
Business trip with a fixed itinerary. You know the route, you have a corporate card — almost no airport exchange needed.
Return to Moldova (you've been here before). You have a plan, you know the lay of the land, maybe even MDL left from the previous trip.
Scenario | Airport | City | What to change, where |
|---|---|---|---|
Late-night arrival, no MDL | + (urgent) | – (closed) | 300–500 MDL at the airport, the rest in the morning |
Daytime arrival, you have a card | – (worse rate) | + (wider choice) | 200 MDL at the airport, the rest at a bank |
Daytime arrival, no card | – (but needed) | + | 800–1,000 MDL at the airport, the rest at a bank |
Business visit for a day | – | + (or by card) | 100–200 MDL at the airport |
4-hour transit | + (fast) | – (no time) | The minimum at the airport |
Return flight with leftover MDL | – (worse rate) | + (the day before) | Exchange in the city a day ahead |
How much to change at the airport? Add up your specific first-hour costs:
Realistic starter total for a single passenger with a working card — 300–600 MDL. For a family or a night-time arrival without a card — 800–1,500 MDL. Anything beyond that is already the main exchange — better done in the city.
Before you fly out of Moldova you may have MDL left over. Where to change it back:
Small leftover (50–200 MDL). Easier to spend at duty-free or at an airport cafe.
Medium leftover (200–1,000 MDL). Exchange in the city the day before you leave. The city bank rate is noticeably better than the airport's.
Large leftover (1,000+ MDL). Definitely in the city. Walk into a bank, exchange unhurried.
Very large leftover (5,000+ MDL). You can ask the bank for a private rate. See Where it's better to exchange a large sum in Moldova.

Arrival from Bucharest, daytime flight. You land during the day, everything in the city is open. Change 200–300 MDL for the ride; the main exchange at a central bank the next day.
Arrival from Istanbul, late evening. City banks are closing. 500–700 MDL at the airport covers a taxi, dinner and morning coffee.
Arrival from Moscow, morning flight. City banks open in 1–2 hours. The minimum at the airport, the main exchange in the city during the day.
Arrival from Italy, night flight. Family with kids. 1,000–1,500 MDL at the airport, the main exchange the next day.
Arrival from Tel Aviv. Often a direct day or evening flight. 300–500 MDL at the airport, the rest at a bank.
Arrival with a Bucharest connection. If you already have RON from Bucharest — exchange some for MDL right at the airport so you have it for the ride. The main amount in the city.
4–6 hour transit. Change 200 MDL for coffee and a snack, carry the rest onward.
The day before departure:
On departure day:
Before heading to the gate:
ATM. Withdraw MDL on an international card. The rate is set by your issuing bank. For most cards the ATM beats the airport counter. Key thing — pick MDL, not your "card's currency" (that's DCC).
Card in the taxi. Bolt, Yandex Go, city services — they take cards. You may not need to exchange currency at the airport at all if you pay for the taxi by card.
Backup MDL. If you've been to Moldova before — a small amount left from the previous trip. The polymer MDL notes hold up for years.
Wait for the bank to open. If you land in the morning, central banks open in 2–3 hours. The rate there is better.
Step 1. Before you board. Open the widget on this page. Check the average rate for your currency.
Step 2. After landing. Stop by the airport exchange point and look at the rate. Compare it to the daytime one.
Step 3. Decide. If the gap is moderate (1–2%) and you need a small amount — exchange. If the gap is large or you need a big amount — use an ATM.
Step 4. Change the starter amount. 300–600 MDL for one person, 800–1,500 MDL for a family.
Step 5. Head to the hotel. Pay the agreed fare.
Step 6. The next day. Open the widget, pick a bank. Do the main exchange in the city.

In most cases, the city. The airport rate is usually 2–5% worse. But for urgent expenses (taxi, water, a snack) the airport is handy.
The starter amount for the first hour: 300–600 MDL for a single passenger with a card, 800–1,500 MDL for a family or someone without a card.
Only if you have a lot of MDL left and didn't manage to exchange in the city. The rate there is the airport rate.
Change the minimum for a taxi, get to your hotel. The main exchange the next day in the city.
Yes, if you have a working card. Pay the taxi by card and pull cash from an ATM later.
Most international ATMs work with Visa and Mastercard. If your card is JCB, UnionPay or Amex — it may be trickier.
For most cards — the ATM. But pick MDL, not your card's currency.
A few safety rules for after the airport exchange and the trip into the city:
Don't pull a large sum out in the arrivals hall. If you've changed 800 MDL — count quickly, put it in your wallet. Don't sort each note on the way out.
Don't flash your wallet in the taxi. Have the fare amount ready in advance so you don't have to pull out the rest.
Bag across the chest, backpack on your back. Standard at the airport and on public transport.
Cash spread around. Some in the main wallet, some in a jacket pocket, some in an inside pocket of the bag. Not everything in one place.
Card and cash kept separately. If the wallet with cash is lost, the card stays. And the other way round.
Don't follow "helpers". If someone is very insistent about helping with your bags or showing you the way — pay closer attention.
Moldovans who fly through Chisinau regularly have settled on a few habits:
Never change the main amount at the airport. It's automatic: 200–300 MDL and that's it.
Keep a small MDL reserve after the previous trip. The polymer notes store well.
Keep the exchange receipt. In case customs asks when leaving with a larger sum.
Know your bank in the city. One or two trusted ones to visit the next day.
Don't rush. If the flight's in the morning and the plan is to visit a bank — book the visit for 10:00, not "as soon as it opens".
Airport vs. city isn't an either-or. It's a split of jobs: airport — for the starter amount and urgency, city — for the main exchange and a normal rate. Exchanging in both places is normal; the trick is doing so in the right proportion. The widget on this page shows exactly how far today's airport rate is from the market average, which is all you need to fix that ratio.
